ERC ROUND #4 | BARUM RALLY
The 2017 Barum Czech Rally Zlín and its challenging cocktail of twisty, bumpy and dirty stages lived up to their reputation. Aided by the reliability of their respective PEUGEOT 208T16s, the PEUGEOT RALLY ACADEMY’s two drivers fought hard and finished shy of the podium.

  • JOSÉ SUÁREZ and CÁNDIDO CARRERA provided further evidence of their speed in the Czech Republic and showed their usual determination to finish on the podium. Their bid took a blow, however, when they lost more than two minutes due to a crash on Saturday’s final stage. The incident dropped them out of the top 3 but they battled hard to fight their way back to 4th at the chequered flag – just 1.6 seconds short of the podium – thanks to a smart drive on Sunday.
  • It was all or nothing for PEPE LÓPEZ and BORJA ROZADA in the Czech Republic but a puncture, an accident with an animal and other issues put them out of contention for 2017’s Junior U28 crown. It was naturally a huge disappointment for the Spanish pair following their campaign’s strong start, but the will be back stronger, full of great learnings to put into practice on the next event.
  • Both PEUGEOT 208 T16s proved reliable and reached the finish to gain several hundred kilometres’ additional competitive running and valuable experience for the PEUGEOT RALLY ACADEMY team.

JOSÉ SUÁREZ, driver Peugeot Rally Academy
“The Rally Czech Barum Zlín was a hard event. We didn’t have a good feeling during the first loop but we were pleased when we improved the second time through. It’s a shame about my mistake on Saturday and we also picked up a puncture, otherwise we could have targeted a podium finish. We did our best to fight our way back to third and we showed some good speed, so that’s good for confidence ahead of the next rally in Rome.”

PEPE LÓPEZ, driver Peugeot Rally Academy
“It was a completely new rally for us. We managed to finish the race, but it was a tough weekend for us because we weren’t able to find our usual pace. We now need to take a hard look at what happened, identify the positives and do our best to be stronger in Rome. A big ‘thank you’ to Peugeot Sport and to everyone in the Peugeot Rally Academy team for their efforts and hard work during the rally”.

LAURENT GUYOT, Director, Peugeot Sport Customer Competition
“We always knew the Barum Rally was going to be hard, so our aim was to get both cars to the finish and pocket as many points as possible. The Czech Republic is now behind us and I am sure both drivers learned a great deal from this event.”
