208 RALLY CUP – Critérium des Cévennes (24-26 October) - Round #6/7
For its penultimate round of the season the 208 Rally Cup heads to the 61st Critérium des Cévennes this weekend, also a round of the FFSA French Rally Championship. Competitors will have to cover 192.33 km of special stages, made up of twisty and demanding roads. It’s a weekend that is particularly crucial for the leading trio in the championship - Jean-Baptiste Franceschi, Loïc Astier and Patrick Magnou - but above all for Mathieu Franceschi who could already claim the Junior title ahead of the Rallye du Var, the final round of the season.

  • Heading into the sixth and penultimate round of the 208 Rally Cup, three drivers are still in the thick of the fight for the 2019 championship title. Jean-Baptiste Franceschi, Loïc Astier and Patrick Magnou are the three title protagonists and they will all have to cope with extra pressure on the shoulders this weekend as they battle for the crown: their sole objective.

  • Jean-Baptiste Franceschi  currently leads the standings after five rounds, having won on three occasions. He currently has a 10-point margin over Loïc Astier in second. With two wins plus a second place, Jean-Baptiste has shown that he has the speed to win the championship but on an event that is as demanding as the Critérium des Cévennes, caution has to be the watchword – as is the case for his two title rivals as well.

  • Loïc Astier  has been another major star of the 208 Rally Cup this season. He will have to score this big points this weekend to close down the gap to Franceschi, while also needing to pull clear of Patrick Magnou, who is 10 points behind in third overall.

  • With four podiums from five events, Patrick Magnou has been the most consistent driver this year. However his retirement from the Rallye Cœur de France dropped him down the championship order. Nonetheless, he maintains a mathematical chance to become champion. Everything still to play for among the top three.

  • Léo Rossel  is competing at home this weekend and is battling for the Junior title, so he aims to do extremely well on the Criterium des Cévennes. On roads that are familiar to him and inspired by the career trajectory of his brother Yohan – the 2018 208 Rally Cup champion and current leader of the FFSA French Rally Championship in a Citroën C3R5 – Leo is sure to fight Mathieu Franceschi hard for the junior title.

  • Mathieu Franceschi has shown an extremely high level of performance at the wheel of his Peugeot 208R2 since the very start of the season. By the end of this rally he could become Junior champion before the series is even finished, if things go well for him. He starts the event with a 20-point lead over Leo Rossel.

  • Pauline Dalmasso will be driving a Peugeot 208 R2 once more: her second participation in Peugeot’s promotional rally formula this year. She is looking to gain more experience at the wheel of a 208 and the demanding roads of the Criterium des Cévennes will be an excellent venue for her to continue climbing the learning curve.

  • The 208 Rally Cup is one of the most attractive one-make series on the FFSA French Rally Championship. Yohan Rossel, the current leader of the French championship in a C3R5, is proof of this. He became 208 Rally Cup champion last year, with his win ensuring a seat in the C3R5 for a full season of the French Rally championship. The same prize will be awarded for 2020. For the Junior champion, Peugeot sport will provide another season in the 208 Rally Cup next year. This mission to support young drivers runs deep in the DNA of Peugeot Sport, which has been organising promotional championships for more than 40 years to help the next generation of talents make their mark.

QUOTES

Jean-Baptiste Franceschi – provisional championship leader
“A real challenge awaits us this weekend at the Critérium des Cévennes, which will be the first time there for us. These are twisty roads, which I like a lot, but the weather and tyre choice will be very tricky as conditions can vary from one moment to the next. We scored some important points at the Rallye Cœur de France and now we have a 10-point cushion over Loïc, so we will have to do our very best in order to consolidate our lead.”

Loïc Astier – second in the overall championship classification
“I’m delighted to be coming back to the roads of the the Critérium des Cévennes, which was actually the first rally that I ever took part in. I know that the stages are very technical and that we will have to manage our pace in order not to make any mistakes. We worked really hard to prepare this rally and our objective is to be on the pace of the very best, just as we were on the Rallye Cœur de France. The level is extremely high this year and that motivates us to give the very best of ourselves. I can’t wait to get going now!”

Mathieu Franceschi – fourth in the overall championship classification, first Junior
“This is a very important rally for us as we are able to possibly secure the Junior title. In order to do that, we have to score three points more than Leo Rossel, who is from the local area and will be very motivated to do well. We want to underline our level of performance and have a clean rally on roads that I already know. It’s going to be important to avoid problems. The weather is capable of changing in the course of just a few kilometres and that’s going to make it a tricky job. Our goal is to take the title and to be sure of our next season.”
