208 RALLY CUP I RALLYE TERRE DU HAUT VAR / 28 - 30 June 2019 - ROUND #2/7

For the second round of the 208 Rally Cup season, the competitors will gather at the very first Rallye Terre du Haut Var, a round of the FFSA French Gravel Championship. A total of 18 crews will take the start on southern French stages set to be characterised by extremely hot weather. After a two-month break, the contenders will be back behind the wheel of the Peugeot 208 R2 in a championship that is still wide open.

  • The 208 Rally Cup contenders will be tackling an event that is brand new, but in an area that is a traditional heartland of rallying in France. As it's the first running of the event, everyone starts on a level playing field, with the crew making the best pace notes and getting an instant feel for the stages likely to grab an advantage.

  • The extremely hot weather forecast for the Var region represents a real challenge for man and machine. Temperatures will be close to 40 degrees all weekend, severely testing the cars and the tyres. For the crews too, the weather will be a worry. With temperatures of more than 50 degrees in the cockpit, it’s going to be a massively demanding rally.

  • This is a home round – or virtually a home round – for the 208 Rally Cup favourites. Jean Baptiste Franceschi, Loic Astier and Anthony Fotia all grew up in the area, and are hoping to use their local knowledge to gain an advantage in the championship.

  • The Rallye Terre du Haut Var route is well-known to motorsport fans, as part of it contains stages formerly used for the legendary Rallye des 1000 Pistes. Big crowds are expected – so the crews will be anxious to do their best in front of them.

 QUOTES

Loic Astier, 208 Rally Cup driver – CHL Sport Auto
“At the Rallye Terre des Causses, we were fighting at the top of the time sheets from the beginning, and then a problem forced us to retire. So our goal for this second rally of the year is very clear; we need to end up on the podium to stay in the title race. It's an interesting rally as it will be new for everyone, so it’s going to be vital to make good pace notes and find the right feeling with the roads. I can’t wait to get going in this classic rally territory, in the middle of a military zone. I’m from this area, so I’m really keen to show the best of myself this weekend, but I’m not the only one. I’m sure it’s going to be a very close and intense battle.”

Jean-Baptiste Franceschi, 208 Rally Cup driver – Sarrazin Motorsport
“For this rally, which everyone is discovering for the first time, making the right pace notes and finding a level of performance from the very beginning will be key. The weather will also be a factor to think about. With more than 40 degrees expected, it’s going to be incredibly hot in the car, so it's going to be important to deal with that and avoid mistakes, in order to be in front and score some important championship points. Starting this rally here on home territory is a dream for me. I’ve often heard people talking about it so I’m delighted to finally be attacking the stages for myself in this well-known military area, against an extremely strong field of rivals.”
