308 RACING CUP ROUND #2 | PAU
The PEUGEOT 308 Racing Cup proved a star attraction of the 76th Grand Prix de Pau where a bumper crowd turned out to line the street track in the southwestern French city. Although the circuit is notorious for being difficult and technically challenging, the cars delivered breath-taking performance and were only a second short of the lap times posted by the GT4s, a sure pointer to the pedigree of Peugeot Sport’s newcomer and an eloquent advertisement for the brand’s latest single-make racing series.

  • Competing in his home city, Junior Gaëtan PALETOU (Milan Compétition) celebrated with an emotional maiden 308 Racing Cup victory in Saturday’s race, while the championship’s provisional leader Julien BRICHÉ triumphed in Sunday’s clash.
  • After showcasing their speed at the year’s opener at Nogaro, the Juniors (under 25 years old) put the cat amongst the pigeons once again in Pau. Gaëtan PALETOU and Teddy CLAIRET (Pussier Automobiles by Clairet Sport) monopolised the top two places in Race 1, and the latter followed through with another second spot in Race 2.
  • Peugeot 308 Racing Cup Gentlemen Drivers Rafaël VILLANUEVA (Milan Compétition) from Spain and Frenchman Denis GIBAUD (Milan Compétition) won a race apiece in Pau.

QUOTE, UNQUOTE…
Laurent GUYOT (Customer Competition Manager, PEUGEOT SPORT)
“Pau always delivers an exceptional weekend of motorsport and our cars proved particularly strong for their first time around this famous street track. The fact that the two races were won by a Junior driver, Gaëtan Paletou, and the more experienced Julien Briché shows how balanced this year’s entry is. With a third of the calendar completed, the top five are covered by just 16 points, so the inaugural 308 Racing Cup is turning out to be a fiercely fought affair.”

Gaëtan Paletou (Junior, winner of Race 1)
“I was a little surprised to hit the ground by qualifying on pole position. I certainly wasn’t expecting that. The circuit is close to my home which I reckon is only three minutes away in my 308 Racing Cup! The start of the first race was a little chaotic but I posted a good Sector 2 time and that made up for the ground I lost around the rest of the circuit. I made sure I didn’t succumb to the pressure that my rivals tried to apply through Virage de la Gare which is always difficult. The latter part of the race was quite stressful but it was a tremendous, emotional feeling to be able celebrate a victory with my family.”

HOW THE WEEKEND UNFOLDED…
Saturday, May 20: Despite taking part in only his third 308 Racing Cup qualifying session, Gaëtan PALETOU (Milan Compétition) claimed pole position to get his weekend in the streets of Pau off to the perfect start. Born just a few hundred metres from the grid, the local Junior went on to pocket both the win and the fastest race lap. He was chased by Teddy CLAIRET (Pussier Automobiles by Clairet Sport) and David POUGET (GPA Racing). A first-lap tangle eliminated Jimmy CLAIRET (Pussier Automobiles by Clairet Sport) and Julien BRICHÉ (JSB Compétition).

Sunday, May 21: Although he was fastest in qualifying, Jimmy Clairet (Pussier Automobiles by Clairet Sport) started from sixth on the grid after taking a penalty for an infringement during Race 1. Julien BRICHÉ took his place on pole position but was slower off the line than Xavier FOUINEAU who was ultimately penalised for a jump start. That handed the day’s victory to Julien BRICHÉ who was followed past the chequered flag by Teddy CLAIRET and Nicolas MILAN (Milan Compétition).

After providing a clear glimpse of their speed at Nogaro, the 2017 308 Racing Cup Juniors were in form once again in Pau. Gaëtan PALETOU and Teddy CLAIRE claimed the top two spots in Race 1, while Teddy CLAIRET took his score for the season to date to four podium finishes from four starts to comfort his position at the top of the class’s provisional points table. Richard AMAURY (GPA Racing) twice figured in the top five overall in Pau.

The weekend’s Gentlemen Driver victories went to Spaniard Rafael VILLANUEVA (Milan Compétition) and Denis GIBAUD (Milan Compétition).

► Next meeting: Dijon, France (July 1-2).
