ROUND #3/6 – Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium
The 308 RACING CUP visited the legendary Spa-Francorchamps track in Belgium for its third round, supporting TCR Europe and GT Open. A total of 17 PEUGEOT 308 RACING CUP cars took to the track as part of the one-make series and six PEUGEOT 308TCR cars were entered in the highly-competitive TCR Europe championship.

In the 308 RACING CUP, at the mid-season point, Julien Briché re-takes the championship lead with a 12-point advantage over his main rival, Jimmy Clairet. At the end of a hard-fought weekend, each driver has three victories apiece. It’s a very tough battle.

In TCR Europe, the PEUGEOT 308TCR won with Julien Briché for the third time in six races this year. Jimmy Clairet showed all his potential in Race 2, finishing second. But after receiving a penalty from the race organisers, he lost his excellent result. Aurélien Comte is also in the fight for the title. Having been consistent in his results from the start, the Frenchman is currently third in the overall standings. These performances all underline the prodigious capabilities of the 308TCR, which was specifically developed by Peugeot Sport’s engineers to meet the international TCR regulations.

308 RACING CUP

  • After the third round of the season at Spa-Francorchamps, the duel between Jimmy Clairet and Julien Briche has become even more intense. With three wins each since the start of the season, just 12 points separate them, in Briche’s favour.

  • Xavier Fouineau, who has been fast and consistent since the start of the season with four podiums from six races, keeps his third place overall and remains a regular contender for wins.

  • Johan Boris Scheier, returning to competition this year, claimed a second podium. After finishing second in Race 2 at Nogaro, he benefitted from the disqualification of Jimmy Clairet on Sunday to take the final podium place in Belgium. He’s now fourth in the overall classification.

  • Fred Caprasse put on a great show at his home race. The Belgian driver was determined to do his best in front of his local fans. Having qualified third, he finished second in the first race. He started from second in Race 2 but got caught out at the first corner, before retiring on lap six. He’s currently sixth overall in the championship.

  • In the AM category (for drivers aged over 25 without an established record of results) – a category that represents half the fieldonly Sylvain Pussier has managed to take two wins since the start of the season (Hockenheim Race 2 and Spa Race 1). The competition in this category is extremely close, with no fewer than five different winners to date: Sylvain Pussier (Hockenheim Race 2 and Spa Race 1), Jean Laurent Navarro (Nogaro Race 1), Xavier Guyonnet (Nogaro Race 2), Stephane Ventaja (Hockenheim Race 1) and Marc Amourette (Spa Race 2) for his first participation in the 308 RACING CUP.

  • Among the JUNIORSTeddy Clairet’s return for a cameo appearance in the under-25 category interrupted the previous domination of Florian Briche (the winner of Nogaro Race 2 and Hockenheim Race 1). Louis Meric (the winner of Nogaro Race 1) and Aurélien Renet (winner of Hockenheim Race 2) will have to perform at the best of their capabilities in the next round to make a difference.

PEUGEOT 308TCR - TCR EUROPE

  • In the first TCR Europe race, Aurélien Comte (P4) and Jimmy Clairet (P5) were both top five finishersJulien Briché confirmed the performance he showed in the first two races and won again in Race 2 : his third race win of the year.  Although Jimmy Clairet crossed the chequered flag in second place, he picked up a penalty that dropped him to 22nd place. Aurélien Comte, who was consistent since the start of the season, was fifth in Race 2, and is now third overall in the rankings.

  • Close to the mid-season point two 308TCR drivers are in the top three overall of the championship. Julien Briché is the leader with 147 points, while Aurélien Comte has climbed up the order to third place (with 123 points), underlining his championship credentials.

QUOTES

JULIEN BRICHE – JSB COMPETITION DRIVER
TCR Europe and 308 Racing Cup championship leader.
“It’s great to win, as the weekend has been action-packed and we had a lot of work on as the result of various accidents, in TCR and the Cup. After my big crash in Free Practice 1 in TCR I didn’t think that I would be winning a race, and especially not taking the championship lead after three events! But thanks to a great job from the team and every single person’s commitment, the car was competitive. In the 308 Racing Cup, I’m back in the lead of the championship.  I was third in Race 1 and I won Race 2, after Jimmy (Clairet) was penalised. I’m also happy for Xavier (Fouineau) who took another podium and third overall in the championship. But this weekend I’m just really happy that Lilou is fine after her big crash in Race 1 in TCR Europe.”

JIMMY CLAIRET – PUSSIER AUTOMOBILES BY CLAIRET SPORT DRIVER
Winner 308 Racing Cup, Race 1.
“It was a complicated weekend! A mixture of joys and disappointments. In TCR Europe, I’m really happy with the progress we’ve made and our pace over a flying lap. But I’m also disappointed to lose second place in Race 2 after a penalty: the rules of racing can be tough! We’ve still got some work to do to up our pace during races but Teddy and I both feel confident, and hard work always pays off, whatever happens. In the 308 Racing Cup, after Nogaro I was 30 points behind and now at the mid-season I’m only 12 points behind. I’m going to stay concentrated and work hard to continue that upward curve.”
